Since Vietnam’s ascension to the World Trade Organisation on January 7, 2007, the country is booming economically with record growth. The rolling tourism demand is creating steep challenges for the industry. Tour operators’ activities are increasing nationwide both for outbound and inbound operations. As a result, the air transport sector is opening up to new players who are initiating more frequent routes to existing destination and new ones when possible.

Overall, infrastructure projects are on the rise all over the country. Among 31 key transport infrastructure projects already assigned by the prime minister, three mammoth projects are most useful to the tourism industry: the North-South Expressway, the Hanoi-HCM City Express railway and the Long Thanh International Airport near HCM. The plan is to have many new hotels, roads, highways and airports created nationwide to sustain the growth. Unfortunately, most developments are still far from being effectively completed or even started. Nevertheless, Ho Chi Minh City’s new International Airport is due to open before the year end.

Among all the issues related to the development of tourism in Vietnam, the hotel sector is the most problematic issue in Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi. Elsewhere, demand and prices are still rising but at a pace that is quite normal in this type of market. For the economic and political capitals, business and leisure travel demand is so high that most upscale hotels (4 to 5 stars) are running short of rooms on a yearly basis. As a result, hotels prices in this category have risen to levels that were simply unimaginable last year. What used to be a low season is no more and the better hotels are often fully booked up to six month in advance!

To cope with these important challenges, Focus Asia is planning to reorganize its services and tours for the international market with weekend or shorter stays in the two main cities. It is as an opportunity for travellers to spend more time at destinations that have more character and style, while remaining price competitive. We plan to introduce new programs to suit those interests. These new attractive products should be available to you before the new season begins. In the meantime be reassured; we still deliver the best services possible at the most competitive price.
